Vitamin D and Omega threes! Two of my most recommended supplements. I love recommending them because the best way to get them is through sunshine and eating our beautiful Alaskan salmon. Basically, your chiropractor in Juneau recommends going fishing in the sunshine, then eat your catch, the Best doctor’s prescription ever. Today I wanna talk about why I recommend them so often. They are some of the very few supplements that I take in addition to getting them naturally because they are so important. Let’s break down what they do for the body. First, we will talk about vitamin D, and then Omega 3s

Vitamin D

Here is a list of processes Vitamin D is associated with, I am going to dive a little deeper into the specifics of a few items that have been blowing my mind lately.

Improves mood

Vitamin D can improve mood when you take it as a supplement, get it from your food or the sunlight because of its necessary action in the formation of serotonin the hormone responsible for allowing us to feel content. Almost everyone in Juneau has heard about seasonal depression. It is a big concern here and vitamin D is the antidote to seasonal depression. Seasonal depression happens when there is not enough sunlight to synthesize vitamin D in the skin during the winter months. Vitamin D is used by the body to synthesize serotonin which is the hormone that allows you to feel contentment. Without vitamin d your body cannot synthesize contentment hormones and so you are physically unable to feel content. If you want more info on that check out this article.  As a chiropractor in Juneau, I am not trained to treat any form of mental illness but I am trained to recognize the signs and symptoms to help you get the care you need.

Absorption of calcium and phosphorus

Without vitamin D our bodies would not be able to absorb sufficient amounts of calcium and phosphorus. These minerals are essential for strong bones making vitamin D essential for a healthy skeleton.

Facilitating immune function

Vitamin D helps boost immune cells as well as inhibit the collateral damage that can sometimes be caused by the inflammation pathway, more info here.

Improves Cardiovascular function

Vitamin D has been shown to decrease heart disease and hypertension potentially through its anti-inflammatory processes or another action not yet fully understood, more info here.

Deficiency is linked to dementia

As I stated before vitamin D helps improve mood because of its connection with the production of serotonin. Lack of serotonin at certain developmental stages, and or stages of aging is also associated with several other mental illnesses including Alzheimer’s dementia, and Parkinson’s disease to name a few. Keep your mind sharp and help those you care for who is still developing by increasing vitamin D in their systems.

Let’s look into omega 3s

Improves mood

Just like vitamin D, Omega 3s are tied to the serotonin pathway in the brain that allows for contentment. Specifically, omega 3s are responsible for the release and reception of serotonin within the brain.

Decreases ADHD symptoms in children

In this article, they analyzed several articles in which they treated children with ADHD by supplementation of omega 3s. They saw that the symptoms associated with ADHD decreased moderately.

Decrease overall inflammation

Omega 3s are anti-inflammatory, they help decrease the inflammatory response in the body.

Improvement in joint function

Increasing omega-3 fatty acids has been shown to decrease joint pain in this study. There is more research being done in this area as well.

The Big Deal

In my opinion here the big deal is the combination of both Vitamin D and Omega 3s to improve the function of the serotonin pathway. This article mentions all the benefits of improving that process is you want more info on it take a read. In short, if your brain is functioning optimally your whole body will function better because your brain is the central command center. It knows what needs to happen for you to be healthy. This is why I like to recommend these two supplements, without a properly functioning nervous system you can’t function properly.

To serve you as your chiropractor in Juneau most successfully I am looking into different home test kits for omega 3s. I just got my results back from my first one and found out I need to be consuming more of those good fats. Soon we will be offering at-home test kits so you can know if you need to change things or anything to give your brain what it needs to function optimally.
