Spring in Juneau brings longer daylight, melting snow, and plenty of slick slush on the sidewalks. When you are pregnant, simply walking the hills of downtown or navigating a muddy trail with your dog requires extra balance and effort. Your body goes through a tremendous amount of structural change over nine months, and those changes do not always feel comfortable.

As a prenatal chiropractor in Juneau, my goal is to help expecting mothers feel strong, comfortable, and well-aligned as their bodies adapt. Chiropractic care during pregnancy is gentle, safe, and focused on helping your pelvis and spine adapt to the shifting weight of your growing baby.

How Pregnancy Shifts Your Spine and Pelvis

During pregnancy, your body releases a hormone called relaxin. Relaxin serves an essential purpose: it softens your ligaments so your pelvis can open during birth. However, looser ligaments also mean your joints have less passive stability.

At the same time, your baby grows forward, pulling your center of gravity outward. To keep you from tipping forward, your lower back arches deeper, your mid-back rounds, and your neck often strains forward. This postural compensation places extra pressure on your sacroiliac (SI) joints, lumbar spine, and hips.

When pelvic bones shift unevenly under these changing forces, you might notice sharp twinges when rolling over in bed, walking up Basin Road, or stepping out of your car. Chiropractic adjustments work to restore normal joint motion and balanced tension throughout the pelvic ring.

    Common Discomforts We Address

Pregnancy is a natural process, but persistent discomfort does not have to be an accepted part of your routine. We regularly see expecting mothers who are dealing with a variety of biomechanical strains.

Low Back and SI Joint Pain

The sacroiliac joints sit at the base of your spine where your sacrum meets your pelvis. When one side moves differently than the other, it can cause a dull ache or sharp, stabbing pain in your lower back and glutes. Gentle joint mobilization helps ease this uneven stress.

    Round Ligament Discomfort

Round ligaments anchor your uterus to the front of your pelvis. As the belly grows, these ligaments stretch like rubber bands. Sudden movements, coughing, or simply standing up too fast can trigger a sharp spasm in the lower abdomen or groin. Balancing the pelvis and gently releasing tight soft tissues can take undue tension off these ligaments.

    Sciatic Nerve Irritation

When the piriformis muscle in the glute tightens to stabilize a shifting pelvis, it can compress the sciatic nerve. This often feels like a shooting, burning ache down the back of your leg. Addressing pelvic alignment and relaxing surrounding muscle spasms often provides significant relief.

What Prenatal Chiropractic Care Looks Like

Many women wonder if regular chiropractic adjustments are safe during pregnancy. The answer is yes, provided they are performed by a chiropractor trained in prenatal techniques. We adapt every single technique to accommodate your changing body and comfort levels.

You will never be asked to lie flat on your stomach on a standard flat table. We use specialized pregnancy pillows with belly cutouts and adjustable table sections that allow you to lie face down comfortably and completely supported, often a welcome relief all on its own.

The adjustments we use are gentle and specific. We rely on low-force techniques, drop-table assistance, and light soft-tissue work to release tension around the pelvis, sacrum, and lower spine. We also incorporate the Webster Technique, a specific pelvic analysis and adjustment designed to reduce torsion in the pelvic muscles and ligaments.

Staying Active and Safe in Southeast Alaska

Staying active during pregnancy is great for your stamina, mood, and circulation. Around Juneau, however, our terrain requires a little extra caution, especially when your balance is shifting.

Take short, steady strides when walking on wet boardwalks, gravel, or slushy paths. Wear footwear with good traction, and consider using trekking poles if you are heading out on trails like Sandy Beach or the Airport Dike Trail. The poles give you two extra points of contact to help support your pelvis and keep your balance steady.

Listen closely to your body. Pregnancy is not the time to push through sharp pain. If an activity triggers a catching sensation in your groin or deep ache in your tailbone, scale back and let us check your pelvic alignment.

When to Contact Your Midwife or OB-GYN

Chiropractic care is wonderful for biomechanical discomfort, but it is always part of a collaborative care team. If you experience severe trauma from a fall, sudden sharp headaches, unexplained swelling, vaginal bleeding, fluid leaking, or sudden severe abdominal cramping, contact your obstetrician, midwife, or the hospital immediately.

We love working alongside Juneau's local midwives, doulas, and OB-GYNs to make sure you have comprehensive, supportive care through every trimester.

Preparing for Labor and Postpartum Recovery

A balanced pelvis gives your baby the optimal space to settle into a good position for labor. When the pelvis and sacrum move freely, your body can work more efficiently during birth with fewer structural restrictions.

Care does not stop once your baby arrives. Postpartum recovery involves another rapid hormonal and postural shift, combined with the physical demands of nursing, carrying a car seat, and rocking your newborn. Continuing gentle care after birth helps your pelvis re-stabilize and eases upper back tension from feeding postures.

If you are looking for a prenatal chiropractor in Juneau to support you through your pregnancy journey, we are here to help. Contact Happy Family Chiropractic today to schedule your prenatal consultation and keep your body moving comfortably.
