Summer in Southeast Alaska is full throttle from the moment the daylight stretches late into the evening. Whether you are launching a kayak out at Amalga Harbor, pulling shrimp pots in Lynn Canal, or loading heavy fish totes into the truck, your body is working hard. We wait all winter for this weather, so when it arrives, nobody wants to sit on the couch.

That sudden surge of physical activity often takes a toll on your upper body. If your shoulders are aching, clicking, or burning after a day on the water, you are definitely not alone. Understanding what causes that strain can help you protect your joints and keep enjoying everything a Juneau summer has to offer.

## Why Southeast Alaska Summers Are Hard on Shoulders

The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the human body, but that mobility comes at the cost of built-in stability. Unlike the hip, which sits deep inside a bony socket, the shoulder blade and arm bone rely almost entirely on muscles, tendons, and ligaments to stay in proper alignment. When you ask that joint to repeatedly pull, push, lift, and paddle without much rest, irritation can set in fast.

During the colder months, most of us spend more time indoors and move a little less. Then, once the salmon start running and the water calms down, we jump straight into eight-hour boat days, hauling anchors, lifting heavy outboards, and paddling miles along the coastline. That sudden jump in physical demand quickly exposes muscle imbalances and joint restrictions that may have been quiet all winter.

## Common Shoulder Issues from Boats, Paddles, and Pots

Shoulder pain rarely comes from a single motion. It is usually the result of repetitive strain combined with awkward lifting positions on uneven boat decks, rocky beaches, and slippery docks.

### Rotator Cuff Tendonitis and Strain

The rotator cuff is a group of four small muscles that hold your upper arm bone centered in the shoulder socket. When you paddle for hours or repeatedly cast a heavy rod, these tendons can become irritated and inflamed. You might feel a dull ache deep in the shoulder, pain when reaching behind your back, or weakness when lifting your arm overhead.

### Shoulder Impingement

Impingement happens when the space between the top of your shoulder blade and your rotator cuff tendons narrows. Every time you raise your arm, the tendon pinches against the bone. This is very common among kayakers and canoeists who maintain a high-angle paddle stroke without engaging their core and back muscles.

### Scapular Dysfunction and Mid-Back Tension

Your shoulder blade (scapula) must glide smoothly along your ribcage for your arm to move freely. Hauling heavy crab or shrimp pots, muscling skiffs off the beach, and hunching over a cleaning table can lock up the joints in your mid-back and neck. When your upper back stops moving properly, your shoulder joint is forced to overcompensate, leading to sharp pain around the shoulder blade.

## How Chiropractic Care Supports Shoulder Mechanics

When people think of visiting a shoulder pain chiropractor in Juneau, they often assume we only focus on the spine. While your spinal alignment is essential, chiropractic care looks at the entire kinetic chain. Your shoulder function depends heavily on the alignment and mobility of your cervical spine, thoracic spine, ribs, and collarbone.

If a rib is slightly restricted or your mid-back is stiff, your shoulder blade cannot rotate normally. During an exam, we assess how your entire upper body moves together. By delivering targeted chiropractic adjustments to the spine, ribs, and the shoulder joint itself, we help restore normal motion, reduce joint stress, and take tension off overworked tendons.

## Combining Chiropractic Adjustments and Massage Therapy

Joint alignment is only half the battle when dealing with shoulder pain. The muscles surrounding the joint often tighten up defensively to protect an irritated tendon, creating painful trigger points in your rotator cuff, chest, and upper back.

Massage therapy works hand in hand with chiropractic adjustments to calm those overactive muscles. Soft tissue work helps improve local circulation, breaks up stubborn muscle adhesions, and restores healthy tissue elasticity. When your muscles are relaxed, your chiropractic adjustments tend to hold longer, giving your body the space it needs to heal naturally while you stay active outdoors.

## Practical Ways to Protect Your Shoulders This Season

You do not have to give up your favorite summer activities to keep your shoulders healthy. Making a few small adjustments to your daily routine and body mechanics can prevent flare-ups before they start.

First, rethink how you paddle. Many paddlers rely almost entirely on their arms and shoulders to move the boat forward. Focus on rotating your torso from your core and hips with every stroke, letting the large muscles of your back and abdomen do the heavy lifting. Keep your hands at or below shoulder height to avoid pinching the rotator cuff.

Second, mind your lifting mechanics on the dock and the boat. When hoisting shrimp rings, coolers, or totes of fish, keep the weight as close to your body as possible. Avoid lifting heavy loads while twisting your spine. Take an extra minute to get secure footing on wet decks, bend your knees, and lift with your legs rather than pulling solely with your arms and shoulders.

Finally, take five minutes to warm up your upper body before launching your boat or heading down the trail. Gentle arm circles, chest openers, and mid-back rotations increase blood flow to cold tendons and prepare your joints for physical effort.

## When to Seek Prompt Medical Attention

Most summer shoulder aches respond very well to conservative care like chiropractic, massage, and smart rest. However, certain symptoms require immediate medical evaluation by an emergency or urgent care provider.

If you experience a sudden loss of arm strength, an obvious physical deformity after a fall, severe unrelenting pain following a trauma, or numbness and tingling that shoots all the way down into your fingers, have it evaluated right away. You should also seek immediate medical attention if shoulder pain is accompanied by chest tightness, shortness of breath, dizziness, or pain radiating into your jaw, as these can be signs of a cardiovascular emergency.

## Get Back to What You Love in Juneau

Living in Southeast Alaska means taking full advantage of the long days while they are here. You should not have to spend your summer sitting on the sidelines because of a cranky shoulder, stiff neck, or aching back.

If shoulder discomfort is slowing you down on the water or the trail, we are here to help. Contact Happy Family Chiropractic in Juneau today to schedule your appointment and get your body moving comfortably again.
