Let's look at some common myths about chiropractic care. ## Myth #1. Chiropractic Adjustments are painful \*\*Reality:\*\* The adjustment should never hurt, that is the goal. Gentle adjustments to the spine to correct the position of a vertebra should be just that, gentle. Sometimes there is some slight discomfort after the adjustment that comes from muscle soreness but that typically goes away in the days following the adjustment. Occasionally an adjustment might cause a slight bit of discomfort immediately following. This is typically caused by a slight bit of excess force during the adjustment from the chiropractor. Our doctors always say that he can attempt an adjustment a second time and add force then if necessary but he cannot take force away once it has been delivered in an adjustment. His goal is to adjust the spine with as little force as necessary even if it takes him a second adjustment attempt with a slight bit of added force. The actual adjustment is rarely painful. ## Myth #2. Chiropractic Approach is not for Children \*\*Reality:\*\* Chiropractic is a natural therapy used by people of all ages, from infants to grandmas and grandpas. Chiropractic Methods are Only for Relieving Back Pains \*\*Reality:\*\* Chiropractic is known for reducing back, neck, as well as joint pain. However, it has many other advantages, such as improving mobility and promoting wellness. Chiropractic care focuses on the nervous system which controls the whole body. Chiropractic is a holistic approach to wellness. ## Myth #5. Chiropractors Are Not Really Doctors \*\*Reality:\*\* "You're not a real doctor" I hear that all the time and this myth has propagated simply from lack of information on the subject. The word doctor is derived from the Latin verb "docere," meaning to teach, or a scholar. Doctors are teachers and that is largely what we do in the office. We teach people how to be healthy. The truth is we have the same education as a medical doctor except in pharmacology which falls outside our scope. So our education is the same and we are both teachers of health so we are in fact doctors we are just doctors of chiropractic, not medical doctors. We also need to maintain our licenses through continual education the same way medical doctors do. ## Myth #6. Chiropractic Care is Not Effective \*\*Reality:\*\* Many people think that chiropractic care is not effective because it does not involve any medicines and is non-surgical. In contrast to the belief, the chiropractic approach tries to find the root cause of the patient's ailment and remove it permanently over a few sessions through manipulations and adjustments. ## Myth #7. Manipulations are Risky \*\*Reality:\*\* Spinal manipulations should always be done by a licensed, well-trained, and experienced practitioner. They are recognized as safe options. As with everything in life, there are risks involved, but they are relatively low. The most commonly reported side effect of chiropractic care is slight muscle soreness in the days following an adjustment.
